Ingredients

  • For a delightful Dutch apple pie, gather the following ingredients:
For the Crust:
  • - Pre-made pie crust or homemade flaky pie pastry
For the Filling:
  • 8 - cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 - tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 - cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 - cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 - cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 - teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 - teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 - teaspoon salt
  • 1 - teaspoon vanilla extract newly added for depth
For the Crumble Topping:
  • 1 1/4 - cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 - cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 - cup granulated sugar
  • 1 - tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 - cup unsalted cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 - cup rolled oats newly added for an appealing texture

Method

Step 1: Preheat the Oven
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This ensures that your pie will bake evenly and perfectly.
Step 2: Prepare the Crust
  1. Roll out your pie crust until it’s about 1/8 inch thick. Gently place this crust into your pie pan, letting any excess hang over the edges. If you’re using a homemade crust, be sure to prepare it according to your favorite recipe. Set aside while you prepare the filling.
Step 3: Make the Apple Filling
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine your sliced Granny Smith apples with lemon juice, both sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla extract. Stir gently until every apple slice is coated evenly. Allow this mixture to rest for about 5-10 minutes; this helps the sugars draw out the natural juices of the apples.
Step 4: Prepare the Crumble Topping
  1. In another bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Add in the cold butter pieces and use a fork or your fingers to blend until the mixture becomes crumbly. If you fancy, add rolled oats for added texture.
Step 5: Assemble the Pie
  1. Spoon the apple filling into the prepared crust, packing it in lightly. Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples. It’s okay if some of the apples are peeking through; that just adds to the charm!
Step 6: Bake the Pie
  1. Place your pie in the preheated oven and bake for 50-55 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Allow the pie to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

- Use a mix of apple varieties: While Granny Smith are great, adding a couple of Honeycrisp or Braeburn apples can give additional flavor.
- Allow apple filling time to sit: This helps enhance the apple flavor and ensures they will be well-seasoned.
- Chill your crust: If you’re making a homemade crust, chill it for about 30 minutes after rolling it out. A cool pie crust bakes better.
- Cover edges while baking: If the edges of your pie crust start browning too quickly, cover them with strips of aluminum foil to prevent burning.
- Serve warm: Dutch apple pie is best enjoyed warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.
