Ingredients

  • 1/4 lb Genoa Salami, 6–8 thin slices
  • 1 cup Mediterranean Olive Tapenade
  • 1/8 lb Provolone cheese, 3–4 thin slices
  • 1 tablespoon Roasted Red Pepper strips
  • 1/4 lb Spiced Capicola or smoked deli ham, about 4–6 slices
  • 1 10 -inch round rustic Italian loaf
  • 1/8 lb Sliced Mozzarella cheese, 3–4 delicate slices

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Bread
  1. Start by slicing the rustic Italian loaf in half horizontally. You want a nice, even cut to create a perfect sandwich. Hollow out a bit of the soft bread from the interior. This makes space for all those delicious fillings and prevents the bread from becoming soggy.
Step 2: Layer It Up
  1. Spread a generous amount of Mediterranean olive tapenade on both insides of the bread. Don’t be shy! This is where the magic begins.
Next, layer the Genoa salami, capicola (or smoked ham), and provolone slices. Alternate between the meats and cheeses to ensure every bite has a little bit of everything.
Step 3: Add the Roasted Red Peppers
  1. Now, you’ll want to sprinkle the roasted red pepper strips on top. They not only add sweetness, but their bright color enhances the sandwich visually. I often find myself overloading on these roasted gems because they are that good!
Step 4: Finish with Mozzarella
  1. Finally, finish off the layering with mozzarella cheese. This cheese adds a different texture. Once you’ve piled everything high on the bottom half of your loaf, press the top down gently.
Step 5: Wrap It Up
  1. Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in plastic wrap. Let it sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Step 6: Slice and Serve
  1. After your muffuletta has chilled, unwrap it and cut it into wedges. Serve with your favorite chips or a simple salad, and you’ll hear oohs and aahs from your guests!

Notes

  • Genoa Salami gives that classic Italian flavor, rich and fragrant. It’s important to get a good quality product for the best taste.
  • Mediterranean Olive Tapenade is a blend of olives, capers, and spices. You could make your own at home, but store-bought works wonders in saving time.
  • Provolone Cheese brings a semi-soft texture and creamy flavor without overwhelming the dish. Its mild taste complements the salty meats.
  • Roasted Red Peppers can be found jarred or you can roast your own. The sweetness from roasting really elevates the overall flavor.
  • Spiced Capicola or smoked deli ham introduces a spicy kick along with a delicate mouthfeel.
  • Rustic Italian Loaf should hold up well to the fillings. Look for a loaf that’s slightly crispy on the outside, soft inside, and big enough to accommodate all your ingredients.
  • Sliced Mozzarella Cheese adds a light, fresh component. It balances out the robust flavors of the meats and tapenade beautifully.
