Step 1: Prepare the Burger Patties
- Start by dividing your pound of ground beef into four equal portions. Form them into slightly larger-than-normal patties; they will shrink a bit when cooking. Season each patty generously with salt and pepper. If you want to get fancy, a sprinkle of garlic powder adds a nice kick.
Step 2: Sear those Onions
- Grab a skillet and heat it over medium heat. Once hot, toss in your thinly sliced yellow onions. Cook them slowly, stirring occasionally. You want them caramelized, not burnt. This usually takes about 10 minutes. Once they’re golden brown and sweet, pull them off the heat.
Step 3: Cook the Patties
- In the same skillet (or in a grill if you’re adventurous), cook the patties over medium-high heat. About 3-4 minutes on each side should do it for a nice medium-rare. In the last minute, add a slice of American cheese on each patty, so it melts into cheesy perfection.
Step 4: Make the Spread
- While the patties are cooking, whip together your animal-style spread. Combine mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, ketchup, sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and a dash of salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix until smooth and taste it; adjust seasoning as needed.
Step 5: Assemble Your Burger
- Now comes the best part—assembly! Start by spreading a generous layer of that delicious sauce on both sides of the burger bun. Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom, add your first patty with melted cheese, followed by a slice of tomato, and a handful of those caramelized onions. Top it off with another cheese-laden patty and finish with the other half of the bun.
Notes
- Use a food thermometer. Aim for 160°F for perfectly cooked beef.
- Don’t squish the patties. Let them be; this keeps them juicy.
- Toast the buns. A quick toasting in the pan enhances flavor and texture.
- Experiment with seasoning. Want to get wild? Try adding smoked paprika or chili flakes.
- Cook in batches. If you have a large family, don’t crowd the skillet; it reduces cooking temperature.
